NKB40 FOR ONE HEARTLAND

Forty fine art painters from the studios and galleries from Minneapolis' Northrup King Building, will host a collaborative gallery show in order to raise funds for One Heartland.

The show will be held in the 3rd floor Gallery of Northrup King and will feature an eclectic group of painters – from representational to abstract, from landscape to portrait, from outlandish to nuanced – providing for all tastes. You are invited to purchase the prints and pain

tings on display – with 20 percent of all proceeds going directly to One Heartland.

Based in Minneapolis, One Heartland has run camp programs for children facing significant life challenges for over 20 years – challenges such as HIV/AIDS, type 2 diabetes, homelessness and identifying as LGBTQ. The majority of their programs are offered at no charge, as most of their campers’ families live at or below the poverty line, and so they rely on fundraisers such as NKB40 for One Heartland to make their camps a reality. It was when I first started teaching junior high that I became gut-wrenchingly aware of the scrims that kids create to make it through their days. That was more than 30 years ago. Since then I’ve realized that it’s not only adolescents who protect themselves behind a self-manufactured curtain; we all do this, some more than others.

How do you get behind them? What are the scrims that you erect -- and more importantly, why?

My new series of multi-layered collages deals with this question. The work will be ready in time for the Northrup King Building’s 15th Art Attack on November 2, 3 and 4. I smile every time I read this quote. I’m hardly capable of saving humanity but I sure do feel “creatively maladjusted,” especially when I head to my studio, a place where an ADD specialist would find a enough material for a PhD. thesis. I’ve finally decided to ignore other people’s urgings that I stick to one voice/one medium -- and the work I’ve done over the past several months reflects this joyful rebellion. The result? Glad you asked. I’ve continued with the hands portraits...but nothing’s finished yet. The botanical watercolors have morphed into ink and oil monoprints. I’ve fallen in love with something called “spirit houses.“ I hope to have a couple of ‘em ready for November’s Art Attack (see below). What is finished is a series of framed 5” x 5” acrylics that are really cool, if I do say so myself. If you're thinking about holiday gifts, you might want to consider a gift of art. I'm offering gift certificates in any amount to be redeemed by the recipient whenever he/she gets around to it. You'll find 3" x 4" prints on miniature easels ($12), oils in the same size on easels ($25), framed and unframed watercolors ($45 - $75), framed acrylics ($125), and unframed oils ($400 - $600).
